Using a shipping container for inland or maritime transport? You’ll need to obtain a special safety document, called a CSC certificate, before you get started. In this guide, we’ll walk through the basics of CSC certification, including technical requirements, examination criteria, and renewal options.

CSC and offshore container certifications ensure that freight and specialized equipment withstand intermodal shipping and harsh marine environments.

Key Certifications & Standards

  • CSC (Convention for Safe Containers): CSC Container Certification covers international safety standards for general freight transport across road, rail, and sea. Every unit requires a physical CSC Safety Approval Plate detailing maximum gross weight, stacking load limits, and inspection dates. A CSC plate alone does not authorize a container for offshore lifting use.

  • DNV 2.7-1 / DNV-ST-E271: Governs standard offshore containers (maximum gross mass up to 25,000 kg) used on oil, gas, and marine platforms. It mandates heavy-duty solid steel construction, shock absorption, certified padeyes, and dynamic lifting sling sets. 

  • DNV 2.7-2: Covers offshore service units, temporary living quarters, and technical modules with integrated electrical, fire, and gas safety systems.

  • DNV 2.7-3: Applies to large offshore containers and modular units with a maximum gross mass greater than 25,000 kg. 

  • ISO 10855 (formerly EN 12079): The international standard specifying design, manufacture, testing, and periodic inspection rules for offshore containers and associated lifting sets. 

  • Third-Party Inspection & Load Testing: Performed by recognized classification societies such as DNV, Lloyd’s Register, or Bureau Veritas to verify structural welds, floor integrity, and padeye load capacity.
